Best Things To Do in London at Christmas (+ Map & Itinerary)
December is one of the best months to visit London to witness the city come alive with magical decorations and whimsical Christmas light displays. Think ice skating, mulled wine, carol singing, festive markets and so many fun activities to check out.
As a London local, I notice that most of the decorations usually go up from mid-November – with some London Christmas lights switched on from the first week of November. However, I recommend visiting London from the last week of November to ensure you don’t miss out any of the festive fun.
At the end of this post, I’ve made a Google map with all locations pinned so you can easily navigate your way through London and find my recommendations.
Here is my guide on over 50 of the best Christmas things to do in London.
Note: my guide below features opening dates for last year (2025), I've kept these up to give you an idea of when the festivities will kick off for 2026. I will be updating this guide in October 2026 with new openings and key dates for 2026 as they get released.

Things to do in London on Christmas Day
Wondering what’s actually open in London on December 25th? While it’s true that Christmas Day is one of the quietest days of the year in the capital, with most shops, attractions and restaurants closed, London definitely doesn’t grind to a complete halt. In fact, if you plan ahead, Christmas Day can be a surprisingly lovely time to explore the city at its calmest.
One important thing to know is that there is no public transport operating in London on Christmas Day. That means no Tube, buses, Overground or trains. However, don’t let that put you off entirely. Taxis, Uber and other ride-hailing services do operate, although availability can be limited and fares may be higher than usual, so it’s wise to factor this in.
Cycling is also a great option, with Santander Cycles and e-scooters typically available, and walking through an almost traffic-free London is genuinely part of the magic.
From peaceful park strolls and iconic landmarks without the crowds, to festive swims, Christmas Day walks, and the handful of restaurants that do open for special lunches, there are still plenty of ways to make the most of the day. Here’s my guide on the best things to do in London on Christmas Day:
Festive London Christmas Day River Thames Lunch Cruise
Celebrate Christmas Day in London in a truly special way aboard a Festive River Thames Lunch Cruise, where you’ll glide past iconic sights like the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye while savouring a 3-course traditional Christmas lunch in a fully heated saloon.
With panoramic views from the upper deck and festive music adding to the atmosphere, this leisurely 3-hour cruise is a memorable alternative to typical Christmas Day plans.
Christmas Lights Open Bus Tour
See London at its sparkliest on the Christmas Lights Bus Tour, a 90-minute open-top ride past the city’s most iconic festive displays.
With a live London guide, dazzling views of Regent Street’s angels, Oxford Street’s stars and all the major landmarks, it’s the most magical (and convenient!) way to experience the capital at Christmas.
Have lunch at a festive restaurant
With most restaurants in London closed on Christmas Day, booking lunch at a festively decorated spot is one of the easiest ways to make the day feel special without any stress.
A few reliable favourites that stay open on the 25th include Duck & Waffle, Gaucho Covent Garden and Dalloway Terrace, all offering a celebratory atmosphere, beautiful Christmas decorations and festive menus worth booking ahead for.
London Afternoon Tea Bus Tour
This Afternoon Tea Bus Tour with Panoramic Views is a lovely way to spend Christmas Day because you get to enjoy a classic British afternoon tea while slowly rolling past London’s most iconic landmarks in comfort.
With public transport not running on December 25th, it’s a perfect, relaxed way to see the city’s festive sights, sip tea (and prosecco!) and savour treats without worrying about crowds or logistics.
Take lots of photos!
With December 25th being the most quiet day in London during the festive season, it’s the perfect day to take amazing photos without battling the crowds. Refer to my Christmas in London Google map for all the best locations to take photos.
